The five-object kit

Why a small, deliberate prop kit makes better photographs than a cupboard full of options.

Sample post. Replace it in the editor with a real one.

A length of linen, a sheet of kraft paper, one botanical, one object with patina and one thing that belongs to the story. That's the kit.

Why five

A small kit forces decisions. With a cupboard of props, every photograph becomes a negotiation about what else could go in; with five, the question becomes where each one sits and whether it earns its place. The book stays the subject.

The best prop is the one the reader notices second.

Building yours

  • Linen for the ground: undyed or oatmeal, creased rather than ironed.
  • Kraft paper for a second surface and a change of texture.
  • One botanical: dried gypsophila, a eucalyptus stem, a sprig of rosemary.
  • One object with patina: a tin mug, a brass ruler, an old key.
  • One story object: something a character would carry.

Keep the kit in one box beside the window. When the light is good, you will want to start in a minute, not twenty.
