Matte covers, foil covers and glare

Foil and gloss throw the window straight back at the lens. Here is how to angle your way out of it.

Sample post. Replace it in the editor with a real one.

Tilt the book a few degrees away from the window until the bright reflection slides off the title. Then raise the camera to match.

Why foil flares

Foil, gloss laminate and spot varnish are small mirrors. A window beside the book is exactly the kind of large, bright shape they love to reflect, which is why the title can vanish into a white streak even when the rest of the cover looks fine.

Move the book, not the light. A five-degree tilt costs nothing.

A short routine

  • Find the glare by looking from where the lens will be, not from where you are standing.
  • Tilt the book away from the window until the streak leaves the lettering.
  • If the cover now looks dark, add a white card opposite the window rather than turning towards the glass.

Matte covers forgive almost everything; foil asks for a minute of patience and repays it with a cover that glints instead of glares.
